nall *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics Mrs. Cartman is about to give Eric a present. Of course Eric is hoping it will be some kind of toy, but it ends up being Hooked On Monkey Phonics to help him win the big South Park Annual Spelling Bee. Kyle finds Rebecca Cutswald to be quite intriguing and tries to woo her with his charm and teach her how to love and learn in public school.

superiorsavior Re: *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics One of my all-time favourites, mainly thanks to the way home-schooling ATE my own 4th and most of my 5th grade expieriences/most of my childhood. I wish the cotsswalds were still around instead of magically disaporated at the end of the episode without explanation like they were stupid british steryotype kids from the 19th century. DIO ROCKS! As does Tweek's dancing... this episode is such a fanart/fic generator. reply

Hayley B Re: *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics I love this episode, also.

I love the monkey that doesn't help Cartman spell right in the spelling bee. Kyle & Rebecca part was interesting (Maybe not as cute as Kenny & Kelly as I said in "Rainforest Shmainforest") , but they were interesting.
Speaking about Kelly. I read somewhere, that she was suppose to appear in this episode too. I will try to watch again. Maybe I'll catch her.
Stan sometimes surprises me, what is going to come out of his mouth. "What a bunch of nerdos' reply -
superiorsavior Re: *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics Stan was kind of supprising in this... he seemed to be OK with mark then was going to help tie him to the flagpole at the end. Butters as a bully was, different. I like the message of this one too

Remember DIO and their greatest of all hits! I can't count the number of good and bad fics I've seen set at this "bay of pigs memorial dance" too. Wonder why Stan and Wnedy didn't go together reply -
Pip Tweek Re: *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics I loved everything about this episode except the points they tried to make and the way they went about it.

Basically they're saying the social skills assimilated through attending public schools are the most important aspect of growing up . And we see dramatic changes in the Cutswald kids after just a few days of interacting with the public school kids. Rebecca magically loses all her inhibitions and her brother instantly becomes popular by beating up Kyle (by the way, where did he learn to fight?) And what lesson did we learn from Stan - that bullying Pip was perfectly okay?
So aside from the main point of the episode, I liked it a lot. reply -
superiorsavior Re: *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics Take it from a guy who was home-schooled (only for 1.75 years) because of 'bullying,' there's something very important you loose from not going to a school, and mingling with other kids, even if you're allowed out to the park/out of the house (which i wasn't and i don't suppose many home schooled kids are) you miss out on a lot of interaction. If it's not the home schooling that made me spontaniously become a shy freak w/o any social skills at all from 6th grade to 10th grade then it's all me so I blame the school. the victim/victimiser relationship with regards to bullys and their targets is very complex and mainly revolves around who feels most 'hurt' by the activities; I think matt and trey were making a description of what happens and not a normative judgment about what SHOULD happen when they mentioned bullying. It was more the most important lesson I've learnt in my entire life (no hyperbolie here) that was being supported by this description, the point Stan makes when Mark asks him why he bickers with Kyle and calls him a fag; guys just do that. It's not meant to hurt the other dude, it's a joke. When I finally learnt not to plot the slow and painfull murder of the entire fammily of anyone who called me a pussy or said my mum was a big fat bitch (she IS shiela, even looks like it with the same hair and all, and made me feel like the ultimate victim for so much of my life) and to just dish out some insults back, I got some actual friends, as Pip no doubt would if he were to join in. This episode was one of the biggest helps I had socially, along with discovering the magical world of forum wars at the same time, so I can't emphasise how much I agree with the message.

The speed at which the dammage wrought by home schooling is erroded is slightly over-egagerated, but then again, i became a totally new man in a matter of months after discovering teh internets so... it could be kyle's magical charms? Better dramatic effect than a protracted change over the seasons I'm sure you'll agree?!
The other main lesson; never fuck with a posh kid!
DID I SAY DIO ROCKS! reply -
Pip Tweek Re: *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics ^^ I agree with you on certain points here; if a kid is home-schooled for a certain length of time and then is, for whatever reason, sent to conventional school, a kid will definitely be worse off for it. Also, DIO rocks.

I can't argue with your personal experiences with home-schooling; I can see how it can have disadvantages for a number of reasons. My main contention here is that the argument against home schooling seems to be too oversimplified to be credible.
I think the lack of socialization could be offset somewhat if a parent is motivated to find groups for their kids to join (scouting for example.) reply -
superiorsavior Re: *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics I must admit, if i were in america (from what i've heard of your schools from the boards) i'd prefer to be home schooled. Good way to counter the loss of socialisation, you should be a parent :p

The only reason the argument was oversimplified here, i believe, is because it's more funny/dramatic (and what matters in a tv show? message or effect?) and it's probably true in a lot of cases of home schooling when the parent takes the kid out because they don't like what's being taught (liberal morality, evolution, etc.) as most home schoolers in the US are, as this often accompnaies a big fammily unit which the child rrely leaves or feels inclined to leave, as the family is so strong... if what i've seen on TV about it is true :p seriosuly, the home schooled kids on TV are all from families with about 12 children who own a ranch. Though like all one-off caractars in South park, they were pretty 2D and on the extreme end of the spectrum. reply -
jewish pride Re: *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics great episode, kyle was really cute here

cartman misspelling chair and kyle's face at hearing the word krocsyldiphithic was really funny
i felt bad for the home schooled kids, it must suck to have such close minded parents reply -
203177 Re: *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics This is another one of my favorites. I liked the part when kyle was singing to rebecca and was explaining love to her. And when he was trying to spell that hard word, that was funny. reply

Michaeloptv Re: *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics One of my all time favorites as well!

I wish they would bring back Mark and Rebecca.
I think this was one of Kyle's greatest roles.
and "Holy Diver" is a song that you hear once, and you cannot get enough of!
Very funny episode too: Tying up Mark to a bench, Cartman spelling "Chare" reply -
sliker6 Re: *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics I cant believe that change from a nervous girl into a slut. But it was still funny. thumbs up reply

zzyzx Re: *313* Hooked on Monkey Phonics My Dad has a friend, who doesn't home school his kids, but sends them to private Jewish school. Jews are what, less than 2% of the population? These kids see 100% of the students are jews. When they go to college (one is next year), it will be a culture shock of the real world. He won't have any connection with socializing with non-jewish peers. I feel sorry for him. This is similar to Mark and Rebecca, who had not experience with their real world peers until after the spelling bee. Isolation of others is always a bad think, IMO, m'kay? M'kay. reply

The spelling bee made me laugh so hard, especially the part with Cartman misspelling chair! reply
